The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score on Thursday was a dismal 53-119-138 as the TSX Venture Exchange lost eight points to 568. Peter Swistak's Vertical Exploration Inc. (VERT) did add 1.5 cents to 8.5 cents on 3.06 million shares. The company -- and investors -- appear pleased with progress at the St-Onge wollastonite project in Quebec.
The economic noose surrounding Vladimir Putin's Russia drew a bit tighter this month, with word that the United States government has imposed sanctions against diamonds mined from the big Grib pipe, in the Archangel district of northwestern Russia. Wait just a minute, you object, suitably flummoxed -- countries aligned with Ukraine purportedly shut down Russia's diamond exports to the West at the start of Mr. Putin's (not so) special military operation in February of 2022. Well apparently, those sanctions -- such as they are -- applied just to diamonds mined by Alrosa, Russia's state-controlled miner.
