The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that U.S. president-elect Donald Trump is threatening 25-per-cent tariffs across the board for Canada and Mexico. The Globe's Lawrence Martin writes that to justify those tariffs, Mr. Trump used the laughed-at rationale that our imports were a threat to American national security. Now, to justify his new ultimatum, he claims that drugs and migrants represent an "invasion" of the United States. Mr. Trump is creating a new divide, driving a wedge between our two societies. Over time we have drawn much of our identity from being different from Americans. Mr. Trump demonstrates how markedly different we are. While the Trudeau government should address some of Mr. Trump's complaints, Mr. Trump should also be reminded that he will need co-operation from Ottawa to implement his mass deportation plan. How about, Mr. President, we bar the door and send them back? The Trump hit on Canada likely has something to do with his dislike for Mr. Trudeau for not doing enough bowing at his feet. Tesla boss and now Trump adviser Elon Musk does not like the Trudeau government either. With the knee-bending loyalists in the Trump camp, he is in a much stronger position than his first term.
