Globe says Poilievre went "unconservative" on Teck

2025-10-24 07:34 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Canada has a Liberal Party and a Conservative Party. The Globe's Andrew Coyne writes that broadly speaking, they are supposed to speak for liberalism and conservatism, respectively. Today, not so much. The policy direction under Mark Carney is revealing itself to be not merely an overdue course correction from the blousy liberalism of his predecessor, but a decisive turn toward illiberalism: harsh on immigration, thuggish on criminal justice, cozy with dictatorships. At the same time, the emerging doctrine of the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre, combining economic nationalism, truckling to big labour and reckless trashing of institutions, can only be described as unconservatism. Mr. Coyne says that today's "Illiberals" and "Unconservatives" are for statism at every turn, meddlesome on economic policy and repressive on social policy. Mr. Poilievre demanded the government block Glencore's takeover of Teck Resources. Then there are his decidedly unconservative attacks on our institutions, from the Bank of Canada to the Supreme Court to the RCMP. What we are getting from the two major parties is something new: a mixture of left-wing populism and right-wing populism.
