The National Post reports in its Monday, Feb. 3, edition that the Wall Street Journal's weekend editorial stated that Donald Trump's plan to impose tariffs on America's two largest trading partners would be "the dumbest trade war in history." The Post's Kelly McParland writes that Mr. Trump proceeded, and it is. The Journal argues that Mr. Trump's crusade makes no sense, as it will penalize goods Americans need, raise prices, contradict his vow to reduce inflation, cost jobs, undermine companies, impact productivity and hurt farmers. A steelworkers union warned the White House that tariffs on Canada would harm 30,000 steelworker jobs, as U.S. refineries rely on Canadian oil. The U.S. imports a variety of goods from Canada and Mexico, totaling $700-billion annually -- more than four times that from China. Despite this, Mr. Trump claims the U.S. can produce everything domestically and believes other countries will still buy American products, even if he restricts theirs from entering the U.S. The Post says logic and reason hold no sway in Mr. Trump's Washington. In Canada, Mr. Trump has unexpectedly resurrected Justin Trudeau as an important figure just as he was fading away.
