The National Post reports in its Wednesday, Nov. 27, edition that to prevent a federal emissions cap on Alberta's oil industry, Danielle Smith's government is seeking to block federal officials from accessing oil and gas facilities and to restrict the disclosure of emissions data without provincial approval. The Post's Tyler Dawson writes that the Alberta government also plans to launch a constitutional challenge if the federal policy becomes law, having introduced a motion under the Alberta Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act. Ms. Smith said in a release, "We will continue to defend our province from Ottawa's senseless and direct attack." The Alberta government has frequently clashed with the federal Liberal government over emissions-reduction and climate-change policies, including opposing and suing to eliminate the federal carbon tax. Alberta has also challenged federal reforms affecting industrial project approvals and sought exemptions from the carbon tax for home heating oil. When Ms. Smith became UCP leader in 2022 after Jason Kenney's resignation, one of her key policies was the Sovereignty Act, which aimed to exempt Alberta from federal laws and court decisions with legislative approval.
