The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that four years after he left Imperial Oil following 39 years at Exxon, Rich Kruger took a job as Suncor's chief executive officer. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that soon after, in August, 2023, he said on an earnings call that the Suncor had been neglecting "the business drivers of today" in pursuit of future-focused, clean and low-carbon energy pursuits, with a "disproportionate emphasis on the longer-term energy transition." Those comments partially resulted in an anti-greenwashing measure, Bill C-59, which aims to stamp out false environmental claims. Mr. Kruger was hauled before two parliamentary committees twice to explain what appeared to be an arrogant call to put profits before the planet. He says he was happy to have the chance to state his and Suncor's case. "Energy and the environment is such an important topic, both in Canada and to the globe, so I actually welcome opportunities to debate and engage on those topics," Mr. Kruger said. "The way some of the meetings unfold, I don't think we always use our time the best. ... But I welcome the opportunity to participate in them, because I think these are topics that are so important to Canada and Canadians."
