The Financial Post reports in its Thursday, June 13, edition that Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has confirmed that a federal tax credit aimed at supporting the construction of carbon capture projects is close to being finalized. A Canadian Press dispatch to the Post reports that Ms. Freeland is eager to see swift progress on the project that was pledged by Canada's largest oil sands companies.
Although the government committed to a tax credit for carbon capture and storage in 2021, the legislation to enact it was not introduced until last fall. This legislation is now in the second-last stage in the Senate, and Ms. Freeland anticipates that it will be law soon.
Derek Evans, the executive chairman of the Pathways Alliance group of oil sands companies, stated in May that the group could not commence its $16.5-billion project until it had fiscal certainty. Ms. Freeland has indicated that this certainty is nearly in place, and she is now urging for the project to move forward with actual construction.
Mr. Cousins says the Pathways carbon capture project is a significant component of Canada's strategy to achieve its greenhouse gas emissions targets by 2030.
