The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Shopify shares leapt 21 per cent after third-quarter earnings that topped analysts' forecasts and projections for better-than-expected results in the year's final three months. The Globe's Irene Galea writes that the company, which provides e-commerce tools for businesses, generated $2.16-billion in revenue in its third quarter, up 26 per cent from last year and exceeding analyst consensus estimates for the seventh quarter in a row (all figures U.S.). Net income, excluding the impact of equity investments, nearly doubled to $344-million, up from $173-million. Last December, Shopify told investors that it had made extensive changes to its business to regain momentum. On top of the steps it had already taken, including selling its logistics division and sharply reducing head count, the company said it would flatten its organizational structure and management style. The company also said it would capitalize on artificial intelligence and focus on new markets: international, enterprise and point-of-sale businesses. Shopify seems to be outpacing investor expectations on its ability to take more share of all three segments, said Scotiabank analyst Kevin Krishnaratne.
