The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Sept. 19, edition that Canada's national greenhouse gas emissions dropped by about 1 per cent in 2023, but the oil and gas sector's emissions continued to increase, offsetting gains in other sectors. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that according to the Canadian Climate Institute, Canada's emissions are now 8 per cent lower than they were in 2005, which was the baseline year for the country's 2030 target of reducing emissions by 40 to 45 per cent. However, emissions from the oil and gas sector increased by 1 per cent from 2022 and now make up 31 per cent of Canada's total emissions. This is in contrast to the electricity sector, where emissions are 62 per cent lower than they were in 2005. Pembina Institute economist Dave Sawyer said Canada is still striving to combat the increasing emissions from the oil and gas sector. The Pembina Institute identifies that sector alone as Canada's highest emitter, responsible for about 12 per cent of the country's overall emissions. Pembina's Matt Dreis said it is crucial that companies prioritize reducing their environmental footprints -- especially with corporate guidance focused on maximizing production.
