Globe says for Goldman, gen AI still has a way to go

2025-01-06 06:59 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that we are over two years into the generative artificial intelligence hype cycle that began with OpenAI's ChatGPT on Nov. 30, 2022, with proponents touting benefits like efficiency gains, cost savings, and enhanced productivity for individuals and companies. The Globe's Joe Castaldo writes that federal Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said at an event in November, "I firmly believe that AI is the holy grail of productivity." There are plenty of naysayers who point out that generative AI is unreliable and prone to errors. Goldman Sachs analyst Jim Covello noted in June that, "Despite its expensive price tag, the technology is nowhere near where it needs to be in order to be useful for even such basic tasks." The reality on the ground, however, is not so bleak. Many companies are finding several small use cases for generative AI that can save time in tasks across coding, customer service, HR, law and more. These applications, however, are low hanging fruit. A survey conducted by the MIT Technology Review and Snowflake found that only 30 per cent of executives view generative AI primarily as a revenue driver, and even fewer see it as a way to reduce costs.
