The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Aug. 12, edition that U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris stated on Saturday that she strongly disagreed with her rival Donald Trump's views on the Federal Reserve. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that she pledged not to interfere with the Fed if she wins the presidential election on Nov. 5. Ms. Harris's stance sharply contrasts with that of the Republican nominee and former president, who stated on Thursday that U.S. presidents should have a say in the Fed's decisions. "The Fed is an independent entity, and as president, I would never interfere in the decisions that the Fed makes," Ms. Harris told reporters in Phoenix, Ariz. Ms. Harris, before heading to Las Vegas for a campaign rally, mentioned that she plans to reveal policy positions next week. "It will be focused on the economy and what we need to do to bring down costs and strengthen the overall economy," she said. Mr. Trump's comments on Thursday offered the most explicit indication so far of his interest in infringing on the Fed's independence should he regain the White House.
"I feel the president should have at least [a] say" on Fed decisions, Mr. Trump told reporters at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
