The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, June 19, edition that Ottawa plans to offer over $10-billion in subsidies for carbon capture, accessible to all industries with priority given to the oil sands, despite the technology being untested at this scale. A Globe editorial says transportation also gets significant attention and funding, as government subsidies help drivers shift to electric vehicles. Emissions for buildings, residential and commercial, were 89 megatonnes in 2022, nearly equal to that of the oil sands. In the effort to fulfill Canada's commitment to reduce total emissions by 40 per cent by 2030, buildings have received less attention compared with the focus on the oil sands or transportation. However, this is starting to change, with some jurisdictions such as California beginning to update regulations regarding the fuel sources for residential and commercial buildings. The Canadian Climate Institute recently published a report about the urgency and challenges to reduce emissions from buildings. The Globe notes, however, that Ontario's Bill 165, limits regulatory oversight and makes it easier for gas supplier Enbridge to expand. The Globe says Ontario is moving in the wrong direction.
