The Financial Post reports in its Monday edition that stock markets globally, from Wall Street to Tokyo, are reaching record highs despite uncertain political and economic conditions. An AFP dispatch to the Post reports that City Index UK analyst Fawad Razaqzada attributes this to easing trade war tensions and a significant influx of money into the markets. The strong performance of tech stocks and growing investor confidence also contribute to these record highs. Central banks, having tamed postpandemic inflation, are lowering interest rates to boost growth and employment. The U.S. Federal Reserve started a rate-cutting cycle in September, 2024, and is expected to cut rates by another quarter percentage point soon. Lower rates ease borrowing for companies and consumers, encouraging economic activity. SPI Asset Management partner Stephen Innes says, "The Fed -- the world's most influential central bank -- is clearly back in easing mode, and that alone resets the global risk-on tone." Mr. Innes says this accommodative monetary policy has led investors to increase liquidity in equity markets to pursue gains. The result has been "a liquidity tide that's lifting nearly every market from New York to Tokyo."
