The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday, Oct. 26, edition that Ottawa will provide Ontario Power Generation with a $970-million loan to build Canada's first small-scale nuclear power reactor at Darlington, which is expected to go on-line in 2028.
The Post's Naimul Karim writes that the investment through Canada Infrastructure Bank is the largest in "clean power" to date.
Often referred to as advanced nuclear reactors, small modular reactors (SMR) have one-third the power generating capacity of traditional nuclear power reactors, are a fraction of the size and are easier to build.
Interest in SMRs has been rising as countries look to nuclear power to cut reliance on fossil fuels, says the International Atomic Energy Agency. Most small nuclear reactor designs, however, are still in the initial stages, except for a few in Argentina, China and Russia. Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson says, "We are doing this because nuclear energy -- as a non-emitting source of energy -- is critical to the achievement of Canada's and the world's climate goals." He adds, "Nuclear power is one source that can help Canada achieve its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, while addressing growing future demand."
