The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday, July 30, edition that many businesses were initially skeptical of generative artificial intelligence when it gained widespread attention in late 2022. The Post's Kelsy Rolfe writes that Telus, however, quickly embraced it, developing its first internal generative AI tool in just two weeks. Today over 35,000 Telus employees use in-house AI tools for analyzing reports, writing code and generating images. Telus focused on helping employees feel confident using the technology by creating a secure internal sandbox for experimentation. Telus's Hesham Fahmy says embracing AI means developing a digitally skilled workers to harness its power. About 60 per cent of Canadian businesses have adopted AI in some form, according to KPMG'S 2023 global technology report. KPMG's Lewis Curley says an organizations' ability to get the most value out of AI comes from making sure employees feel ready and willing to use the technology. BCE's Bell Canada has been rolling out AI applications over the past five years. In the past 18 months, Bell has introduced a generative AI tool that simulates customer queries for new customer service agents, which is a mandatory part of their training.
