The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that according to the federal government, cannabis is safe enough to sell legally but so unsafe that it cannot be seen in the store by minors. A Globe editorial says cannabis laws are inconsistently stricter than those for alcohol or gambling, creating hypocrisy in legislation. As a result, cannabis sellers cannot utilize their storefronts like other vendors, which limits their ability to attract customers through inviting display windows. The Globe says there is no reason for Ottawa to put cannabis vendors in that position. Particularly when the liquor store, just down the street, can have a big visible display of bottles. The Globe says a lighter hand of government is called for when it comes to cannabis. It says the best approach is to align the regulations on cannabis, alcohol and gambling. This would involve easing cannabis restrictions while tightening those for gambling. Treating cannabis as a legal yet shameful substance mirrors the past with the Liquor Control Board of Ontario. Customers felt awkward and immoral when purchasing alcohol in plain bags. While that approach was wisely abandoned for alcohol, it resurfaced in the government's cannabis regulations.
