FP/wire say Curaleaf, rivals see weed going global fast

The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that the cannabis industry has gone global. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Curaleaf Holdings now aims to turn Europe into a launchpad for international growth. British American Tobacco now has an interest in Canadian weed company, Organigram Holdings. Then there is the bill passed last week in Mexico that could make recreational marijuana legal, paving the way for heavy international investment. The global receptiveness to marijuana is accelerating. Consider how rapidly Mexico's stance has changed. The possession of small amounts of marijuana was first decriminalized in 2009, and limited medical use was legalized in 2017. Mexico published regulations to implement broad medical marijuana sales early this year, shortly before the recent bill to legalize recreational use. That is a quick progression compared with the U.S., where some decriminalization began in the 1970s. Decades later, the industry is still seeking approval at a national level for recreational use. With a population approaching 130 million, Mexico is on the cusp of becoming the largest legal recreational market in the world. That could pressure the U.S. to follow suit.
