West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery lost $1.61 to $44.61 on the New York Merc, giving back some of the $3.49 it added yesterday while Canadian markets were closed (all figures in this para U.S.). Brent for February lost $2.31 to $52.16, after adding $4 yesterday. Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $15.75 to WTI, down from a discount of $15.95. Natural gas for January added 10 cents to $3.64. The TSX energy index added 7.10 points to close at 134.46.
Pengrowth Energy Corp. (PGF) shot up 13.5 cents to 61 cents on 3.83 million shares. It had no news to explain the rise, but the same can be said of several energy companies that had excellent days today, such as EnCana Corp. (ECA), up $1.01 to $7.91, Seven Generations Energy Ltd. (VII), up 96 cents to $10.47, and Parex Resources Inc. (PXT), up $1.05 to $15.91. The excitement may have reflected yesterday's sharp rise in global oil prices, even though they slid partly back today.
