The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score on Friday was an upbeat 94-68-138. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 11 points to 604 while polished diamond prices were flat. Sheldon Inwentash and Arno Brand's Gratomic Inc. (GRAT) gained one cent to 12 cents on 4.16 million shares. The company has graphite projects in Namibia and Canada, but lately it has been touting plans to develop graphene-based ultra fuel-efficient tires. The stories, including the tire plan, are struggling to gain traction.
Ken MacNeill and George Read's Star Diamond Corp. (DIAM) closed unchanged at 24.5 cents on 204,000 shares. The company said Thursday that Rio Tinto PLC, its partner on the Star-Orion South diamond project in central Saskatchewan, has begun a 25-hole pilot drilling program on the Orion South pipe that includes both sonic and core holes. The sonic drilling will probe the overburden for stratigraphic data, while the core holes will assess the kimberlite geology.
