The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, May 28, edition that four years after Justin Trudeau questioned the "business case" for LNG deals with Europe, Canada has finally struck one. The Globe's guest columnist Aaron Burnett writes that although it doesn't involve East Coast exports as Mr. Trudeau had discussed, it still signifies Canada selling LNG to Europe. This deal marks a potential shift away from the short-term focus of the Trudeau era and represents a win for Canadian national security, the economy and national unity. Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced that Ksi Lisims LNG in British Columbia will sell about one million tonnes of gas annually to Germany's state-owned utility SEFE. The gas will be sold to Asia, displacing supplies that would otherwise go to Europe, and SEFE has the option to purchase it. Shipments are set to begin in the early 2030s and will last for 20 years. Both countries stand to reap some economic benefits. The same Alberta-sourced natural gas that sells on North American markets for between $3 and $4 a gigajoule goes for four times that in Germany. With numbers like that, Canada can sell gas at a clear profit while Germany nets big savings at the same time.
