The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, June 17, edition that Manitoba Premier Greg
Selinger is hosting a formal meeting with the premiers of other Western provinces in
Winnipeg on Monday. The Globe's Rod Mickleburgh and Kelly Cryderman write the premiers, of course, will be talking pipelines, but not necessarily
Enbridge's controversial
Northern Gateway pipeline.
Instead, focus will veer to a pipeline
going east, from Alberta to
New Brunswick.
In fact, said Mr. Selinger, the
Gateway pipeline proposal to
transport crude oil from Alberta's
oil sands to the West Coast of British
Columbia is unlikely to be
mentioned at all.
That pipeline plan has caused a
rift between the country's two
most Western provinces. Mr. Selinger
believes B.C. and Alberta want to discuss Gateway
"bilaterally." Mr. Selinger says there is broad-based agreement
on an eastward pipeline. "We are all generally
supportive of moving Western oil
to the east."
Alberta Premier Alison Redford
has agreed Gateway will not be part
of the talking points at the Western
Premiers' Conference, which
also includes the three territorial
leaders. She says the west-east pipeline has
"general support and does not warrant much discussion."
