The Vancouver Sun reports in its Friday edition the National Energy Board now says the size of this week's leak on Kinder Morgan's Transmountain pipeline is "less than six barrels of oil," down from initial reports of 12 barrels. The Sun's Jeff Lee writes it was the 78th leak on the Edmonton-Vancouver line since 1961, most of which occurred at terminals, tank farms or pumping stations. In this case, it was a leak in the pipeline itself. The NEB said its inspectors have now confirmed that the release of the oil has been contained, the source of the leak identified and repairs are under way, including the installation of a protective steel sleeve. It corrected later on Friday an initial press release that said that only two barrels of oil had been spilled. "The exact volume of the release will be determined in the coming weeks through examination of the contaminated soil removed from the incident site," the NEB said in a statement. Several organizations, including first nations and environmental groups, have said the spill, as small as it was, heightens concerns as both Kinder Morgan and Enbridge propose competing new oil pipelines carrying oil for export across British Columbia.
