Stock Pickers refreshes Yamana Gold buy

2017-02-22 21:33 ET - In the News

Stock Pickers Digest, in the February, 2017, issue, refreshes its buy of Yamana Gold Inc., recently $4.18. Stock Pickers first said buy in August, 2005, at $4.80. It said sell half in March, 2006, at $8.70. Assuming a $1,000 investment at $4.80, selling half at $8.70 would have yielded a profit of $385. Stock Pickers then said buy 17 times from September, 2006, to September, 2016, at prices ranging from $2.13 to $17.14. Assuming a $1,000 investment for each of the 17 new buys, and taking into account the remaining $500 investment from the March, 2006, half sale, the $17,500 position is now worth $9,179. Yamana owns six gold mines in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Argentina, and also owns 84.6 per cent of Brio Gold, which owns three mines in Brazil. In the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2016, Yamana produced 328,604 ounces of gold, up from 320,346 ounces a year earlier. The higher production, along with higher gold prices, pushed Yamana's cash flow up to 18 U.S. cents a share from 13 U.S. cents a share. The company held $243.6-million (U.S.) or 24 U.S. cents a share in cash as at Sept. 30, and its $1.7-billion (U.S.) debt is a manageable 52 per cent of market cap. Stock Pickers likes Yamana's speculative appeal. Buy.
