The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition Torstar has decided to pull the plug on its struggling alternative weekly, The Grid. The Post's John Greenwood writes all 22 staff, including journalists, designers and salespeople, are losing their jobs; some will be offered employment at other Torstar publications.
When it was conceived three years ago, it was hoped The Grid would have time to carve out a readership niche, but that turned out to be overly optimistic. The media industry has been going through enormous change for more than a decade amid rising competition from new on-line players. In a bid to hold onto readership, traditional print media companies around the world have been forced to reshape their operations, shifting away from a traditional print focus and toward digital and especially mobile strategies.
Torstar is just one of many publishers working to adapt to the new environment, recently selling its Harlequin division. "Obviously, with the disintermediation of the Internet these guys, like all the other publishers, have been grappling with how best to boost revenues in the digital sphere at the same time as their print revenues are falling," said one analyst who asked not to be named.
