The Successful Investor, in the February, 2016, issue, says buy TransCanada Corp., recently $44. The Investor said buy 34 times from January, 1995, to August, 2015, at prices ranging from $12 to $53. Assuming a $1,000 investment for each of the 34 buys, the $34,000 position is now worth $53,108. The U.S. government recently rejected TransCanada's proposed Keystone XL pipeline, intended to carry crude from Alberta to the U.S. Gulf Coast. TransCanada has turned its attention to its proposed Energy East pipeline, which will go from Alberta to Eastern Canada. The pipeline's route was recently modified to avoid environmentally sensitive areas, increasing its cost by 30.8 per cent to $15.7-billion. If approved, it could start operating in 2020. TransCanada is also building other, smaller pipelines and upgrading its power plants. It expects to spend $13-billion on this work by the end of 2018. The company now trades at a reasonable 16.5 times its likely 2016 earnings of $2.66 a share, and its $2.08 dividend (which is expected to be hiked by 8 to 10 per cent annually through 2020) currently yields 4.7 per cent.
