Van Sun says TransCanada's LNG project starting to fade

2015-09-04 09:28 ET - In the News

The Vancouver Sun reports in its Friday edition the window to build liquefied natural gas projects has closed amid a global supply glut, according to energy consultant Wood Mackenzie. Postmedia's Yadullah Hussain quotes Wood Mackenzie's Noel Tomnay as saying: "The reality is that the window of opportunity closed over six months ago for everyone, not just for Canada. Canada's biggest competitor is not the U.S. -- it is probably Mozambique." Mr. Tomnay said East Africa and Australia will probably play the role of niche, "strategic resources" for investors in the next wave of development after 2022. Proposed LNG projects are under pressure as prices are stuck in the $7 to $8 per million British thermal unit range, compared with the $11 to $12 needed long term to make project economics work (all figures U.S.). LNG deliveries to the key Asian markets are also falling at the same time that 140 million tonnes per year of new LNG capacity is being built. British Columbia's Pacific Northwest LNG project is backed by Malaysian state-owned Petronas, but Prime Minister Najib Razak, under fire for a financial scandal, may be treading more cautiously. TransCanada was selected to build the Pacific Northwest LNG pipeline.
