The Successful Investor, in the September, 2015, issue, says buy Thomson Reuters Corp., recently $54. Thomson Reuters listed on April 17, 2008, after The Thomson Corp. merged with Reuters Group PLC. The Investor had bought shares in The Thomson Corp., which we sold on the last day it traded, leaving the profit with the predecessor company. We bought $1,000 worth of Thomson Reuters at $36.15 on listing. The Investor then said buy 12 times from June, 2008, to January, 2015, at prices ranging from $28 to $45. Assuming a $1,000 investment for each new buy, the $13,000 position is now worth $19,872. Thomson Reuters earned $410-million (U.S.) in the quarter ended June 30, 2015, down slightly from $415-million (U.S.). Per-share earnings actually rose to 52 U.S. cents from 51 U.S. cents, on fewer shares outstanding. Revenue fell to $3-billion (U.S.) from $3.2-billion (U.S.). The company enjoyed sales gains in all of its main businesses, but this was offset by the negative effect of the high U.S. dollar on its overseas operations. Thomson Reuters now trades at 20.5 times its likely 2015 earnings of $2.03 (U.S.) a share, an acceptable price/earnings ratio given its high market share, unique products and improving profit margins.
