Taseko Mines Ltd. has filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court of British Columbia against the federal government, seeking damages over the denial of the Prosperity mine. Taseko claims that the environmental assessment decision for the mine was unfair. In the months leading up the denial, federal officials had several behind-the-scenes meetings with opponents of the project while denying Taseko the chance to make any submissions, the suit states.
The allegations are contained in a notice of claim that Taseko filed at the Vancouver courthouse on Thursday, Feb. 11. The suit names as defendants the Attorney General of Canada and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. According to the suit, the federal government's actions amounted to a de facto expropriation of the mine, which Taseko had spent $130-million developing.
