The Successful Investor, in the May, 2015, issue, says buy Transcontinental Inc., recently $18. The Investor said buy 18 times from January, 2004, to October, 2014, at prices ranging from $8.17 to $25. Assuming a $1,000 investment for each of the 18 buys, the $18,000 position is now worth $21,456. Transcontinental earned $36.1-million or 46 cents a share in its fiscal first quarter ended Jan. 31, 2015, up from $26.4-million or 34 cents a share a year earlier. Revenue edged up to $504.6-million from $499.3-million. Asset sales and weaker advertising revenue took a toll on the results, but this was offset by contributions from Transcontinental's new operations, which came mainly from two acquisitions. In May, 2014, the company bought Capri Packaging for $146.1-million, and in June, 2014, it bought 74 Quebec weeklies from Sun Media for $78.8-million. To comply with a competition-related ruling, Transcontinental agreed to sell 14 of its Quebec papers and is closing 20 others, which will leave it with 120 papers in the province. The company now trades at 7.8 times its likely fiscal 2015 earnings of $2.30 a share, and its 17-cent quarterly dividend -- recently raised from 16 cents -- yields 3.8 per cent. Buy.
