The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition Industry Canada is set to reveal the results of today's much-anticipated AWS-3 spectrum auction. The Post's Christina Pellegrini writes 10 carriers are qualified to participate in the auction but all eyes are on two: financially crippled Mobilicity and fellow upstart Wind Mobile, both of which are eligible to bid for licences reserved specifically for small carriers operating in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. The pair had rekindled merger talks before retreating on Jan. 30 to comply with an anti-collusion clause in the AWS-3 spectrum framework. The possibility that Mobilicity, which has been operating under court-supervised creditor protection since September, 2013, could outbid Wind and be deemed the provisional winner on Friday presents an intriguing scenario: If a merger or acquisition between the two companies is eventually completed, Wind could face the prospect of paying a premium for the same assets as part of the transaction. "The government would have really liked Wind and Mobilicity to merge two months ago so that they wouldn't compete against each other," said Jeffrey Church, an economics professor at the University of Calgary.
