SNC wins contract for Azomures gas treatment facility

2015-03-03 13:15 ET - News Release

Mr. Dale Clarke reports

SNC-LAVALIN AWARDED FLUE GAS TREATMENT CONTRACT IN ROMANIA

SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. has been awarded a second engineering and procurement contract by Azomures, for a new gas emissions treatment facility at a nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) fertilizer production plant in Targu Mures, Romania.

The contract will be carried out by the company's fertilizer team, a division of the mining and metallurgy business unit, and the facility is expected to be in full operation in early 2016. As part of the contract, SNC-Lavalin will provide the process design, basic and detailed engineering services, equipment, training, and assistance during the commissioning and start-up stages.

Azomures, part of the Ameropa group, is one of the leading fertilizer producers in Romania, supplying more than 10 million tonnes of fertilizer to its customers around the world each year.

The new facility will treat emissions from Azomures's NPK fertilizer production plant. Once in full operation, the facility is expected to treat a total of 183,000 normal cubic metres per hour of polluted air. NPK fertilizers, also known as complex fertilizers, are one of the most commonly used chemical fertilizers.

"The new flue gas treatment facility will allow Azomures to continue to be one of the leading fertilizer producers in Romania, while reducing its environmental footprint," said Dale Clarke, executive vice-president, mining and metallurgy, SNC-Lavalin Group. "Providing clients with sustainable solutions that improve their operations and the quality of life in local communities has always been and will continue to be our approach to projects."

SNC-Lavalin has a long history in Romania with Cernavoda 1 and 2 Candu nuclear plants, for which it recently completed major safety and reliability upgrades on time and budget. Cernavoda currently provides approximately 20 per cent of Romania's electricity needs. By using nuclear power, Romania is able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by over 10 million tonnes each year. Additionally, SNC-Lavalin has a large administrative support centre based in the country and is proud to provide projects that improve people's quality of life.
