The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition in a world where everyone with a cellphone can be a broadcaster, the CRTC's threat to regulate Internet streaming service Netflix is problematic. The Post's Claire Brownell writes perhaps the real question the CRTC should be pondering is not how broadcast regulations need to change to adapt to the Internet, it is whether the CRTC itself can adapt -- or whether the need for a national broadcast regulator no longer exists. During Timothy Denton's five years as a CRTC commissioner, his proudest accomplishment was in 2009, when the commission decided to not enforce the Broadcasting Act on-line. Mr. Denton said it would be both a practical impossibility and an overreach of government to try to enforce broadcast regulations on-line. "When you talk about extending the Broadcasting Act to the Internet, what you're really doing is a massive extension of the power of the state," Mr. Denton said. "When I was at the CRTC, sometimes I would feel like I was part of the Society for the Defence of Obsolescent Industries," Mr. Denton said. "Nobody's out there protecting bad car technologies. Newer cars come along and we replace the older ones."
