The Investment Reporter, in its Oct. 17, 2014, issue, refreshes its buy of Stella-Jones Inc., recently $29.96. The Reporter said buy 13 times from May 23, 2003, to June 27, 2014, at prices ranging from $3 to $98.72 (the stock split 4 for 1 on Oct. 28, 2013). A $1,000 investment for each of the 13 buys is now worth a rewarding $102,732. The wood products supplier earned $51.3-million or 74 cents a share in the first half of 2014, up from profit of $45.2-million or 65 cents a share last year. Revenue jumped by 19.6 per cent to $602-million, with acquisitions of Boatright Railroad and Pacific Wood adding $28.9-million to sales. Stella-Jones is optimistic about its outlook and expects healthy demand for the rest of the year. Earnings are set to jump by 14.9 per cent to $1.54 a share in 2014, and by another 22.1 per cent to $1.88 a share in 2015. One concern is that telecommunications are becoming increasingly wireless, eliminating the need for Stella-Jones's wooden poles. The company notes, however, that utility pole replacements continue to gain momentum. The Reporter will continue to monitor Stella-Jones for potential changes. It remains a buy for gains, and small but rising dividends of 28 cents a share.
