The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition Rogers Communications missed analyst estimates for first-quarter profit Monday. The Post's Christina Pellegrini writes Canada's biggest wireless carrier spent nearly one-third more year-over-year to keep and migrate subscribers to its "Share Everything" monthly plan. The telco expects to carry these "planned investments" over into the next three months as the entire industry braces for a surge in the number of of cellphone contracts set to expire this summer. Rogers posted a 19-per-cent plunge in its adjusted net income, while operating revenue rose 5 per cent to $3.18-billion. On a call, chief executive officer Guy Laurence pointed to "attractive plans" for mobile customers such as offering 24-month subscription to music-streaming service Spotify Premium and the Daily Vice news app exclusively to Fido Pulse users. Indeed, he called it "a superb proposition" for millennials and "the sort of thing you need to have in the marketplace to go through this period." Whether consumers agree remains to be seen. The average monthly bill of postpaid mobile phone customers inched $1.01 higher to $66.21, but Rogers recorded a net loss of 26,000 of these valuable clients.
