The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition Quebecor's bid to become Canada's fourth national wireless player could steer it toward a deal for Mobilicity now that Globalive Wireless Management has consolidated its control of fledgling carrier Wind Mobile. The Post's Nicolas Van Praet and Theresa Tedesco quote Brahm Eiley at Convergence Consulting Group as saying: "In some ways, Mobilicity is being delivered to them on a plate right now because of the Wind deal. There's more of a chance now that they would look [there]."
Dutch mobile provider VimpelCom Ltd. is selling its interest in Wind Mobile for $300-million including debt. "For Quebecor, it's not all of a sudden 'Okay, Wind got funding. Now we're going to acquire them and have to pay a higher multiple.' That just doesn't make any sense," Mr. Eiley said.
Rather, Quebecor may be seeing Mobilicity as an alternative path to realize its fourth-carrier ambitions. "It's really a test now," he said. "If they don't acquire Mobilicity, it pretty well says that they're not interested" in going national.
Mobilicity has an operational presence in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Also, Mobilicity is sitting on an estimated $500-million of tax losses.
