The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition Open Text's plunging share price Thursday puts it in good company with competitors that have also been challenged by the transition to cloud computing. The Post's Claire Brownell writes the business software and information management company announced weaker-than-expected guidance for its fourth-quarter results and plans to cut 5 per cent of its global work force of more than 8,000. There is also a management shakeup that includes the departure of a top executive. On Thursday, investors made their displeasure known. Open Text shares closed at $51.80, down $7.97. Gabriel Leung, an analyst with Beacon Securities, said other companies that provide similar products and services have had a challenging time shifting their business models to the cloud as well. The old model of licensing software to help clients manage their data, documents and information in-house is becoming outdated. Chief executive officer Mark Barrenechea, off sick since February, will now return to work full-time. Mark Schappel at the Benchmark Company LLC thinks the cloud argument is an excuse, saying, "Someone should be able to go away for a few months without the entire company imploding."
