Open Text wins Semantic contract with Karlsruhe

2014-10-21 09:22 ET - News Release

Ms. Robin Lane reports

KARLSRUHE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY TEACHES ITS WEBSITES NEW TRICKS WITH OPENTEXT; ORGANIZATION IMPLEMENTS OPENTEXT SEMANTIC NAVIGATION PLATFORM TO OPTIMIZE ITS CONTENT FOR A PERSONALIZED AND EASY TO NAVIGATE ONLINE USER EXPERIENCE

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has implemented Open Text Corp.'s Semantic Navigation for its more than 600 websites and 150,000 web pages. Enhancing KIT's key audiences' ability to easily find the information they need, Open Text Semantic Navigation also automates many of the manual processes to save the institute time while helping it offer a more personalized, consistent and easy-to-navigate Web experience.

One of the world's leading research institutions in the technology sector, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology was founded on Oct. 1, 2009. As part of Germany's largest scientific organization, the Hermann von Helmholtz Association, KIT makes a significant contribution to cutting-edge research, both nationally and internationally, and is home to 9,000 employees and 24,000 registered students. While KIT's Steinbuch Center of Computing has successfully operated its websites using Open Text Web Site Management system, the increase of content volume has proven challenging. Website visitors could not find the information they needed among the masses of information and it was clear to KIT that they needed to make a change.

"The data volumes have increased considerably over time," Ulrich Weiss, SCC IT manager at KIT. "An unbelievable quantity of information had to be processed and the information itself was sometimes difficult to find on the many web pages. We considered it a matter of urgency to support the editors in their work."

To help employees, students and other key players quickly find the information they were looking for, the team introduced a new search tool based on the patented technology provided by Open Text Semantic Navigation. Open Text Semantic Navigation helps visitors easily navigate through large quantities of information based on its meaning.

"With more than 600 websites and 150,000 web pages, introducing Open Text Semantic Navigation at KIT was a major project. And it went off without a hitch," said Mr. Weiss. "Everyone was happy that the information required was significantly easier to find. In addition, we can offer more personalized information than before. It is now extremely easy to navigate through the suggested environment."

Open Text Semantic Navigation increased the effectiveness of Web marketing and on-line searches. With the Open Text Content Analytics engine at its core, Open Text Semantic Navigation is also able to intelligently extract the contents based on its semantic meaning using persons, organizations, and locations as well as basic tone and context.

And, according to Mr. Weiss, website visitors were not the only ones to benefit from Open Text Semantic Navigation: "The time saved by over 1,300 of our active Web Site Management editors is enormous. Open Text Content Analytics supports the editors specifically with ever-increasing, day-to-day activities and provides valuable metadata for the websites. The editors were very happy that they no longer have to carry out this work manually. They can now draft a text for which a teaser is automatically published. This, in turn, is automatically linked to the relevant home page and announced accordingly. And, the system performs search engine optimization directly, which often times is overlooked due to time constraints."

Mr. Weiss added: "Among the key factors to our success was the outstanding support from Open Text during and after the implementation phase. We have to provide specific information, which must be easy to find -- a task which Open Text Semantic Navigation performs to perfection."

Open Text Semantic Navigation combines content analytics with information retrieval to automatically present website visitors with content that is relevant to what they are looking for in real time. By analyzing and indexing content and applying content analysis algorithms, it builds a detailed semantic footprint for every page. This patent pending analysis uncovers related content and suggests similar content when users search for sites. Open Text Semantic Navigation is part of the Open Text Discovery Suite, designed to help organizations discover, analyze, and act on enterprise content. Open Text is a true innovator in this space, owning multiple patents and patents applied for in semantic-based navigation, search, and content analysis.

We seek Safe Harbor.
