Controversial Victoria investment adviser Carolann Steinhoff has accused her former employer, Wellington West Capital Inc., of treating her unfairly and oppressively during the six years she worked there and even after. She claims that the firm tried to make her job "so miserable that she would quit." Once she did leave, it attempted to damage her reputation, advising clients to make complaints about her to regulators, she says.

Ms. Steinhoff is responding to a lawsuit that Wellington West's successor, National Bank Financial Ltd., filed against her in the Supreme Court of British Columbia on Oct. 2, 2014. The suit complained that misconduct by Ms. Steinhoff caused the firm substantial losses. National Bank said that it received claims from 10 of her clients and was the subject of a regulatory action. In all, the firm had to pay $363,162 to settle those claims, the suit stated. National Bank sought a judgment against Ms. Steinhoff in that amount.

In a response to that lawsuit, filed on Dec. 15, 2014, Ms. Steinhoff denies that she owes the firm anything. Even if she does, any such payment should be offset by damages stemming from the way Wellington West treated her, she contends. She devotes much of her response to complaining about the six years she spent at the firm.
