Mission Ready files patent application for frag patch

2014-07-22 11:26 ET - News Release

Mr. Rod Reum reports

MISSION READY SERVICES INC. FILES PATENT APPLICATION FOR ITS FRAGMENT PROTECTIVE PATCH

Mission Ready Services Inc. has filed a patent application with the United States Patent Office for its fragment protective patch (the "frag patch"). The application covers the frag patch as a stand-alone protective device as well as garments that incorporate the frag patch into their design.

During Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S. Department of Defence and NATO leadership identified an urgent requirement for the addition of fragment protection to undergarments following a drastic rise in injuries from improvised explosive devices (IEDs). A number of development and acquisition programs were initiated and multiple types of protective undergarments were developed, none of which satisfied the need for a modular solution that could be easily integrated into virtually any combat uniform pant.

Conceived by military veterans, the frag patch is a life-saving adhesive patch that prevents small fragments and debris caused by IEDs, land mines, and other battlefield threats from penetrating combat clothing and injuring the wearer. The frag patch is synthesized using advanced ballistic aramid fibre and anti-microbial silver-blended fabric that has undergone extensive laboratory testing, and proven to be effective against many forms of projectiles including a two-grain right circular cylinder (RCC) at a velocity of 850 to 1,000 feet per second. The invention allows for easy adhesion of the frag patch into uniforms such as military and law enforcement attire. The frag patch is ideal for use in otherwise unprotected regions where lethal injury can be inflicted, such as the femoral artery.

Mission Ready's chief technology officer, Francisco Martinez, states: "It is known that vascular injuries to the lower abdomen and extremities carry a high mortality rate. Wounds to the femoral artery are often immediately fatal, and in certain cases of penetrating trauma to the iliac vessels, cardiac arrest has been found to occur within six to eight minutes of impact. In addition to its life-preserving features, the frag patch is comfortable when worn next to the skin, does not cause chafing or irritation and has inherent anti-microbial properties that help fight infection in the event of an injury, thereby reducing mortality rates and improving recovery times."

"Mission Ready's research and development division continues to make advancements on a number of new innovative products that are at various stages of development and testing. There is a considerable amount of time and expertise that go into the development of a product such as the frag patch. We are elated to be at the patent filing stage as we move to incorporate this progressive technology into combat and law enforcement apparel, and set a new standard for fundamental projectile-resistant personal protective equipment," states Rod Reum, president and chief executive officer of Mission Ready.
