Stock Pickers Digest, in the May, 2016, issue, refreshes its buy of Mitel Networks Corp., recently $8.78. Stock Pickers said buy four times from June, 2014, to March, 2016, at prices ranging from $9.69 to $12.03. Assuming a $1,000 investment for each of the four buys, the $4,000 position is now worth $3,178. Mitel, which makes products for business telephone systems, has agreed to buy another telephony company, Polycom, for $1.96-billion (U.S.). The friendly merger comes at the prodding of activist investor Elliott Management Corp. Elliot acquired interests in the two companies in October, 2015, and currently holds 9.6 per cent of Mitel and 6.6 per cent of Polycom. Stock Pickers approves of the merger. Polycom's products, which include business communication systems that combine data, video and voice, should go well with Mitel's products, which include technology that integrates landlines and cellphones. The merger will allow both companies to cross-sell their products to each other's customers. The combined company will also benefit from a broader range of products, which should attract even more customers. Mitel is a buy.
