Stock Pickers Digest, in the January, 2017, issue, says buy Leon's Furniture Ltd., recently $17.80. Stock Pickers said buy 27 times from July, 1999, to July, 2016, at prices ranging from $9.80 to $51 (the stock split 4 for 1 on June 27, 2007). Assuming a $1,000 investment for each of the 27 buys, the $27,000 position is now worth $52,207. Leon's has 84 stores under its own banner and 221 under the banner of The Brick, a competitor that it bought in March, 2013, for $700-million. In early 2016, Leon's expanded again by taking over the leases on eight Sears Home stores in British Columbia, Ontario and Atlantic Canada. It has since converted those locations to the Sears banner, in the process entering the B.C. market. Stock Pickers says acquisitions add risk, but Leon's is digesting its purchases well. In the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2016, Leon's earned $31.3-million or 44 cents a share, up from $24.7-million or 35 cents a share a year earlier. Sales rose to $575.7-million from $548.9-million. Leon's now trades at 15.5 times its likely 2017 earnings of $1.15 a share, and its dividend yields 2.3 per cent. Buy.
