Globe says foul play unlikely in Khan chairman's death

2015-04-27 06:11 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, April 25, edition that the late Jim Doak was braced to play hardball when he flew to Mongolia two weekends ago to nail down a multimillion payment from the government. The Jacquie McNish and Niall McGee write that the Khan Resources chairman had been waging a high-stakes international legal battle against Mongolia since 2009, when the company claimed the Asian country had illegally seized its uranium mining project. Mr. Doak and Khan chief executive officer Grant Edey flew to the country's capital, Ulan Bator, last week for another round of talks. Mr. Doak was not optimistic about the outcome. Mr. Doak became ill hours and died soon after talks broke off in Ulan Bator Wednesday. The timing of Mr. Doak's death was initially perceived as suspicious by some company officials and investors. By late Friday, however, some friends and family were reaching the conclusion that Mr. Doak, a diabetic, may have died from natural causes. Khan director and long-term friend David AcAusland says, "At this time, Jim's death does appear to have been a result of natural causes." An autopsy was conducted on Mr. Doak and results are expected Monday.
