The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Sept. 23, edition that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA)
has been chosen by Unifor as the
next company it will negotiate
with in contract talks between
the union and the Canadian units
of the Detroit Three automakers.
The Globe's Greg Keenan writes that bargaining with FCA
will begin after Unifor members
who work at General Motors
plants in Canada vote on the tentative
agreement with that company
that was reached earlier this
week. GM employees are slated
to vote on Sunday.
The key issue in talks with FCA will be the same as it
was in the GM talks -- a
commitment to new investment
at FCA facilities in Canada.
Unifor
president Jerry Dias said in a statement, "We have one simple message
for all the Detroit Three automakers: there will be no deal
without commitments to new
investments in Canada." In the case of FCA,
talks about investment will
centre on its large
car assembly plant in Brampton,
Ont.
Unifor wants FCA to
replace the paint shop at the factory
and commit to a new generation
of the Chrysler 300, Dodge
Challenger and Dodge Charger
sedans now assembled by about
3,300 workers, said Unifor local 1285 president Leon Rideout.
