The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, May 29, edition that automakers in Canada whose
vehicles contain Takata air bag have increased
the number vehicles affected and have
upgraded voluntary safety campaigns
into full-fledged recalls.
The Globe's Greg Keenan writes that there are about 1.41 million
vehicles in Canada subject to
recall. Regulators in the United
States have ordered the recall of
all vehicles that
have Takata air bags in them.
The danger is that the air bag
inflators will explode with
enough force to send metal
parts hurtling through a vehicle.
The air bags have been found to
be the cause of six deaths
worldwide.
There have been no abnormal
deployments of Takata air bags
in Canada, Transport Canada
said.
Automakers in Canada, however,
took actions after the U.S.
recall was expanded last week
from high-humidity areas to all
parts of the country.
Honda Canada had previously
put in place a voluntary
safety campaign that covered
about 705,000 vehicles. Now, it is officially a recall.
Honda Canada will
begin notifying customers late
next month.
BMW Canada Inc. upgraded its
voluntary program to a full
recall and expanded the list of
vehicles covered.
