The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Nov. 28, edition that B.C. Premier Christy Clark is disappointed that positive examples set by Crown corporations regarding fair
gender representation have not filtered into the private sector. The Globe's Justine Hunter and Sunny Dhillon write that the women account for just 6.6 per
cent of board membership at the
top 100 public companies based
in British Columbia. Ms. Clark, however, says she will not advocate for
new standards adopted by seven
other provinces that require companies
to disclose policies for improving
the number of women on
boards. Goldcorp, which has two women
on its 10-man board, said it
would not support the adoption
of quotas for its diversity policy. It
said it recognizes the benefits of
employee and board diversity,
but employees and directors will
continue to be recruited based on
their ability and contributions.
First Quantum Minerals, which
has no women on its nine-man
board, and Canfor, which has no
women on its eight-man board,
did not respond to requests for
comment despite repeated
attempts.
