Successful Inv refreshes Emera buy

2016-02-05 20:39 ET - In the News

The Successful Investor, in its February, 2016, issue, refreshes its buy of Emera Inc., recently $43. The Investor said buy 24 times from September, 2000, to October, 2015, at prices ranging from $15 to $50. Assuming an investment of $1,000 for each of the 24 buys, the $24,000 position would now be worth $43,774. Emera owns 100 per cent of Nova Scotia Power, which is that province's main electricity supplier. In recent years, the company has expanded into other regions, such as the United States and the Caribbean, mainly through acquisitions. Emera is now buying Teco Energy for $6.5-billion. Teco supplies electricity to Tampa Bay and New Mexico. Including Teco's debt, the deal is worth $10.4-billion (U.S.). The transaction is expected to close in mid-2016. Emera is selling up to $2.2-billion of convertible debentures to help pay for the purchase. The company will probably earn $2.39 a share in 2016, giving a forward P/E ratio of 18. Emera hopes to raise its dividend by 8 per cent each year through 2019 with Teco's earnings contributions. The current annual dividend of $1.90 a share is an attractive 4.4-per-cent yield. The stock remains a buy; Emera is the Investor's No. 1 income buy for 2016.
