The Successful Investor, in its October, 2015, issue, says buy Emera Inc., recently $42. The Investor said buy 23 times from September, 2000, to March, 2015, at prices ranging from $15 to $50. Assuming an investment of $1,000 for each of the 23 buys, the $23,000 position would now be worth $41,790. Emera is paying $6.5-billion (U.S.) to acquire Teco Energy, which supplies electricity and natural gas to customers in Florida and New Mexico. This is a big purchase for Emera. Including Teco's debt, the deal is worth $10.4-billion (U.S.), or 2.3 times Emera's current market capitalization. When the deal closes in mid-2016, Emera will have $20-billion (U.S.) of assets, and regulated utilities will provide 80 per cent of the combined company's earnings. To help pay for the acquisition, Emera will issue up to $2.2-billion of convertible debentures, which are convertible into Emera shares at $41.85 per share. This may dilute the shares, but Emera expects Teco to increase its earnings per share by 10 per cent. The higher earnings will also help the company meet its goal of raising its dividend by 8 per cent each year through 2019. The current dividend of $1.90 a share is a 4.5-per-cent yield. Emera is a buy.
