2014-12-19 21:37 ET - In the News

The Investment Reporter, in its Dec. 12, 2014, issue, says buy Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd., recently $128.31. The Reporter said buy 23 times from Oct. 21, 1994, to March 7, 2014, at prices ranging from $11.12 to $97.31. Assuming an investment of $1,000 for each of the 23 buys, the $23,000 position would now be worth $84,684. In the first nine months of 2014, the general merchandise retailer earned an adjusted $424-million ($5.30 a share), up from $380-million ($4.68 a share) a year earlier. Canadian Tire's revenues increased by 4.2 per cent in the first nine months of 2014, while costs rose by just 3.8 per cent. Higher cash flow of $1.16-billion confirmed the improved earnings; it also exceeds net capital spending of $444-million and dividends of $119-million. On Oct. 1, 2014, Scotiabank paid $500-million for a 20-per-cent interest in Canadian Tire's financial services business. Scotiabank will provide credit card financing of up to $2.25-billion. Canadian Tire is expected to earn $7.71 a share in 2014 and $8.50 in 2015. The company now pays a $2.10 annual dividend, which is now a 1.6-per-cent yield. The stock remains a buy for long-term share price gains and rising dividends.
