Inv Reporter says buy Canadian National Railway

2016-02-12 20:58 ET - In the News

The Investment Reporter, in its Feb. 5, 2016, says buy Canadian National Railway Company, recently $71.19. The Reporter said buy 22 times from Nov. 15, 2000, to July 31, 2015, at prices ranging from $18 to $109.84 (the stock split 1.5 for 1 on Feb. 19, 2004, and 2 for 1 on Feb. 20, 2006). Assuming an investment of $1,000 for each of the 22 buys, the $22,000 position would now be worth $40,151. In 2015, the railway earned $4.44 a share, up from $3.76 a share in the prior year. Share buybacks, the strong U.S. dollar and CN's diversified customer base all contributed to the higher earnings, which are confirmed by the company's higher cash flow of $5.29-billion. CN has raised its quarterly dividend to $1.50 a share from $1.25 a share. The annual dividend of $6 a share is now a 2.1-per-cent yield. The railway's operating ratio improved by 3.7 percentage points to 58.2 per cent in 2015. CN has budgeted $2.9-billion for its 2016 capital investment program. The newsletter expects the railway to temporarily profit from El Nino, as warmer weather should assist in the movement of freight. Even better, the Trans-Pacific Partnership should spur international trade in the years ahead. The stock remains a buy.
