The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition a former client at CIBC World Markets says he believes one of his investment advisers told him Masonite International might be a takeover target before a deal was announced publicly in 2004. The Globe's Janet McFarland writes, however, the client told an Ontario Securities Commission hearing he cannot remember anything specific about what he was told. The client, identified only as "Hillel F," said he was close
friends with former Montreal CIBC adviser Korin Bobrow and later became friends with his partner Paul Azeff. Mr. F said that either Mr. Bobrow or Mr. Azeff recommended he buy Masonite shares in November, 2004, and said he had the impression that a takeover
for Masonite could be coming. The OSC case alleges Mr. Azeff received tips about takeover deals from former fraternity brother Mitchell Finkelstein, who was a partner at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg in Toronto. Mr. Azeff and Mr. Bobrow are accused of trading on
the information and passing along the tips to a wide circle of clients, friends and family members. Mr. F, a lawyer and accountant, bought $560,000 in Masonite shares in the month before a takeover bid was announced in December, 2004.
